The end result is indeed a market distortion caused by government intervention. Backstopping shoddy lending practices coupled with writeoffs for mortgage interest created the housing bubble. It was great for builders and realtors, while it lasted.

It distorted the market by incentivizing people to go into construction and real estate, eventually creating a cohort on unemployed home builders and realtors.

Consumer demand and prices are two important market signals. Government action masks them, creating bubbles and crashes.

We can't just "call them whatever," because "the end result is" not necessarily "a market distortion caused by government intervention." As Larry says, they could be tax credits, which again leaves me guessing over a third option.

I may be in complete agreement with you guys. Tomorrow is a long day for me so I'll look it up on Tuesday. Larry has done a great job here, I wouldn't even know about this issue if it wasn't for his post. I just need to wade through the swamp and dig in the muck myself a little.

From a moral perspective, I see nothing different between a government subsidy (of any kind) and armed robbery. I just want to make sure we're actually talking about an actual act of theft. Political expediency got us where we are today. That ain't good enough anymore.

I have heard it referred to in both ways. A Reuters story I read called it a .45 cent per gallon subsidy, but Wikipedia calls it a .45 cent per gallon tax credit.

I'm confused. Are we talking about "tax-breaks" or "subsidies?" Because from a financial perspective, each represents something very different than the other and will likewise affect the federal budget differently too. So, I'm Sweden until I have a better understanding of the debate.

Coburn should stay as far away from Norquist as possible. He's a dhimmi with Muslim skeletons in his closet that go back years. Check him out. He's far more than the humble no tax advocate he claims to be.

He is the real deal. As disappointment grows with elected politicians in DC a fresh alternative candidate might be able to step in and clean up. I wonder about his ability to raise money. I regret having to ask that question.

My mouth positively waters at the thought of Coburn running for President. He is a good Senator and a good man, one that sticks to his guns, yet is willing to compromise when it is needed. We could do a lot worse than having him as a candidate. Sadly, I have seen no indication that he would even consider such a race.
