I have enjoyed the above article on Linux. I have used it several times, I must say that is really a very fine Operating System. One of these days I intend to install the latest version of Ubuntu as I do prefer that flavor of Linux.

A belated Happy Linux Anniversary to you Larry! I've been back and forth with various Linux distros since about 1999.

Larry, I came here after surfing around a bit of testing out a new search engine. Anyway, one of the people who frequent our MEPIS Lover's forum has created a great remaster, which includes KDE 4.2, if memory serves correctly. I'm thinking about downloading the .iso and giving it a whirl, as I've not seen the newest KDE in person. Danum's remaster has received a lot of attention at the forum, and might just be something to look into. I'm a Mepis user, and have been for several years. It's good there's so much choice in Linux.

I don't actually share files with anyone, so I believe I am safe. I have my box locked down like Fort Knox.

You don't have to run anti-virus software on your Linux machine but you should. Let's say you dual-boot your machine Windows/Linux like so many people, when you transfer files between Linux and Windows, you could be transferring viruses to Windows even though Linux would not be affected. Run anti-virus under Linux, for yourself and for others you are exchanging files with.

Welcome to the Linux world! I've been using Linux for 10 years now, and came to it as a highly experienced Windows user with a professional background in mainframes but now prior *nix experience. That was back in the days when you still had to really work to make a lot of things work in Linux and there was a great deal of hardware that was simply unsupported. All I can say 10 years later is "Wow, how things have changed! Mostly, you just pour Linux in and it works."

Re: Karl's suggestion about KDE 4, you can try Kubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid) to get a look at KDE 4.1, or wait a while until the Kubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) goes to beta status. RIght now, KDE 4.2 is at release candidate status and should be out soon. However, you may not find it as satisfying as KDE 3.5.x. I'm a long-time KDE user, having come to it from a variety of window managers and then the GNOME environment, starting at KDE 3.0. My take on 4.2 is that it's the first one actually good enough for daily use, but in many respects it's still not as good as 3.5.10. It's usable, but not yet as feature-complete s 3.5.10.

Visually, KDE 4 is great. It's peerless among Linux desktops on that point. However, it's not yet as stable (in my experience) as 3.5.10 and there are also far fewer themes and styles available for it (and I don't much care for the default Oxygen theme; I'm now using Bespin and like it much better, but that's a matter mostly of taste), since it's still relatively new.

I also find the Kickoff menu to be horrid, but you may like it.

In any case, you'll find there will be some learning curve with KDE 4; a lot of things are new/different. On the plus side, KDE 4 has borrowed a number of things from the Mac playbook, although - to my disappointment and probably that of a lot of other people - that doesn't go as far as replacing the Panel Formerly Known as Kicker with a Mac-style dock.

Alpha,
I really do not know that much about Ubuntu. I believe it uses the Gnome desktop. I have heard good things about it, but have no experience with the system.

Brandon...

I'm coming from the same background re platforms. I really enjoyed the Mac especially once then offered OS X. But I hardly ever use it now. I still need a PDF editor and sometimes I do some Flash stuff and I still use Bryce 3D every so often. But I seriously considering getting winD'ohs versions of each of those and then running them in my VM. That way I have one less box taking up space or that I have to jump off to.

Re Linux on the Mac... My apologies if you're already aware of this, but if it's a PPC you'll be stuck re a Flash plugin (if that matters to you). I believe A-d'oh-be doesn't offer a flash plugin for Linux on the PPC.

I switched to Linux full-time about a year ago .... and I too love it. There is a learning curve and my peripherals may be limited a little ... but everything works and I am so happy to be away from Redmond. I love the utilitarian feel of Linux and I never plan to go back. I even like it better than my Mac. In fact ... I will eventaully put it on my Mac .... ! ( :

Thanks a lot for the insight. I sometimes give up with the non-geeky crowd, but apparently Linux is ready for the desktop :)
