Voting for Huckabee–A matter of conscience

As you know, I have written more than once about the “vote for Romney to stop McCain” theory and I have received a comment or two on my blog about some Huckabee supporters switching their vote from Huckabee to Romney, in order to prevent McCain from gaining the nomination.   I would like to weigh in again about that topic.   First, I want to let you read a grassroots press release put together by Lucas Roebuck.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

GRASSROOTS HUCKABEE SUPPORTERS: WE WON’T VOTE FOR ROMNEY
Thousands sign online pledge to vote for “Huckabee only”

BOISE — Grassroots Mike Huckabee supporters from across the country are coming online to send Mitt Romney a message: We will not support you for the GOP presidential nomination. The strong response from conservative voters comes after Romney suggested Huckabee should drop out of the race to unite conservative voters — presumedly behind Romney.

Over 1,000 people have signed pledges to vote for only Huckabee — even if that means writing him in. The pledges can be found online at Vote For Huckabee and OnlyHuckabee.com.

“Governor Romney has proven that for Champions of Life and the Second Amendment, he is a fair weather friend,” said Huckabee supporter Susan Brooks. “What I am hearing from my fellow conservatives is they cannot trust someone who will reverse their position on such important issues on a political whim.”

In the comments posted on Vote For Huckabee, Huckabee supporters have expressed their frustration that the mainstream media and talk radio have attempted to anoint Romney.

“My vote lies with the only true conservative in this race, MIKE HUCKABEE. I am not splitting a vote. I am voting my conscience. If the establishment has a problem with that then they are behaving in an un-American fashion. I could never vote for Romney. NOT NOW. NOT EVEN AGAINST HILLARY,” writes Jessica from New York.

“Mike will be written in if necessary in November as opposed to voting for the lesser of several evils,” writes John from North Carolina.

“It would be a cold day in Hell before I’d vote for Mitt, even if Huckabee weren’t running. You can’t even compare these two men. You CAN compare Mitt to Kerry, though, and it would have been a cold day in Hell before I would have voted for him, either,” writes Lisa.

The latest Fox News poll showed Romney and Huckabee in a statistical tie in a national survey of GOP voters.

“What Huckabee voters are doing is reminding talk radio and the establishment that in America, voters make the choice about who is president, not some oligarchy of talking heads,” said Lucas Roebuck, a Huckabee supporter and former Arkansas newspaper editor.

I could very well just say, “yeah, what they said”, but let me go into detail about why I will never cast a vote for Mitt Romney.

Let me get the religion issue out of the way first.  My non-support of Mitt Romney has nothing to do with his being a Mormon.  I refuse to support him because of several things.  He has changed his positions on every issue know to mankind and from his past behavior, I believe he may very well switch them again, if he were to win this election.  Some people have said they believe his conversion to being pro-life and against gun control, but he has proven he can not be trusted.  With this attitude of saying whatever he needs to say to win an election, he has proven to be a most untrustworthy candidate.

On top of that, he comes across as one of the most condescending people I have ever heard speak.  It is almost as if he feels he deserves the nomination because of all his money. When you put him up against Mike Huckabee, he pales in comparison.

I would never try to tell you how to vote, except to urge you to consider the two candidates and the vast differences between them.  Romney would have you believe he is the only true conservative left in the race, but that is far from the truth.  Huckabee is still in the race and he has been a conservative his entire life.  His is not a recent conversion and from looking at his political career, his positions now are the positions he has held during his tenure as Governor and would be the positions he would hold if elected President.

So, voting for Huckabee is not a vote for McCain, but rather a vote for our conscience.  I believe that is the way we need to vote.  We can all sleep better that way, no matter the outcome.

That’s my take!

Larry

Glad to hear it. I do like Mike. A lot. For lots of reasons. #1 – I love his sense of humor. If you don’t have humor, in these days and times, it just makes it so much darker. He seems to enjoy himself, his life and brings a very special light with him. #2, he speaks his mind. For me, that is imperative. As long as it’s a mind that is truly independent. I love independenence. #3 – he has really hung in the race, even with all Romney’s money. These are character issues. Action issues. None of us can truly say where a candidate will go with ou presidency once he is in. We have seen that over and over. But, if you can see a man’s character, and take your best shot, it’s better than nothing. :-) I can’t vote fo Mike as he is too conservative. But, I very much like him.

  2. jonS says:

Listen up, ONLY a vote for MITT ROMNEY in Republican primaries is a vote AGAINST MCCAIN, a loser that is being aggressively imposed on us by the establishment and the “mainstream” media. By casting your vote on ANY OTHER candidate you will be helping MCCAIN to win the Republican nomination.

  3. Chris H. says:

    Larry,

Your take is usually right on! I enjoy reading your blog. I put a post on my blog Saturday about why I couldn’t support Romney. Looks like we have the same perspective. Super Tuesday will be here before we know it!

  4. Larry says:

It sure will, Chris. I hope and pray the media talking heads will all be surprised by the results.

  5. wickle says:

Jon – Some of us don’t think Romney is any better than McCain. So give up the bogeyman argument. If you can’t actually make a case for your guy, then just drop it.
