To the people of the state of Michigan, introducing Mike Huckabee
Ladies and gentlemen in Michigan, I would like to introduce you to Mike Huckabee. You know, the same fellow who was written off way back when, almost before he even started his campaign for President. Yes, that’s the man, and he can not be written off any longer. He has won the Iowa caucus and has placed third in New Hampshire. In a Rossman Group/MIRS/Denno-Noor poll released Tuesday night, Mike Huckabee is now leading by 1% in Michigan. Winning Michigan will put him in a great position to go on to win South Carolina and move toward February 5th and winning the nomination.
Lansing, MI (LifeNews.com) — A poll released on Tuesday night just hours after the New Hampshire polls closed shows former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee leading in the next presidential battleground state of Michigan. He has a one point lead over former Massachusetts Gov, Mitt Romney and is five points ahead of John McCain, who won on Tuesday.
The survey, conducted by Rossman Group/MIRS/Denno-Noor and done after Iowa’s caucus but before the New Hampshire primary vote, finds Huckabee at 23 percent despite virtually no campaigning in the state.
Romney comes in at 22 percent and McCain, an Arizona senator, enjoys the support of 18 percent of Michigan Republican voters.
Rudy Giuliani, the only self-declared pro-abortion candidate in the race comes in with eight percent, Fred Thompson got four percent in the poll, Ron Paul three percent and Duncan Hunter just one percent.
Another 13 percent of GOP voters in Michigan are undecided, according to the survey.
“The Republican primary in Michigan is coming down to a three-way scrum between Mike Huckabee, Mitt Romney and John McCain,” Kelly Rossman-McKinney told MIRS news. “The real loser is Rudy Giuliani , who didn’t even get to double digits here this time around, proving that being first out of the gate doesn’t get you to the finish line.”
Among Democrats, the poll finds 47 percent support Hillary Clinton, who had a come-from-behind victory in the New Hampshire primary. Barack Obama and John Edwards, the other top two presidential candidates on the Democratic side, are not on the Michigan ballot.
As a result, 28 percent of Democrats said they would be uncommitted, 10 percent said they supported another candidate and another 10 percent were undecided.
The poll is the first since the middle of December, when the Detroit News found Romney leading with 21 percent, Huckabee second with 19 percent and Giuliani in third with 12 percent.
McCain had the backing of 10 percent of the Republicans in that poll while Thompson and Paul polled in single digits.
The survey included 300 likely voters on both the Republican and Democratic sides and the margin of error is plus or minus 5.8 percent.
This is indeed good news for the people of Michigan and for the people of our country. (That means you too, One Mom!) The following video is the first ad Mike Huckabee is running in Michigan. I believe it does a good job of introducing him to the voters of Michigan and letting them know what he is all about. Take a look and see for yourself.
That’s my take!

I’m new to your sight but I did read your about page which said that you felt indifferent about politics but you would probably be blogging about them anyway. However, your blog appears to be about Huckabee from a promotional point of view. So what happened, why did you change?
Hi Larry – we are excited here in Michigan and all the worker bees are working hard for Huckabee.
Last fall, Romney insinuated the whole thing was his because he had the most money … he certainly believed that Michigan was his. The problem is, he hasn’t live here in a really long time, and this is not his father’s Michigan. By 1960 the American automobile industry had been consolidated into the Big Three (General Motors [GM], Ford, and Chrysler) and American Motors. These firms not only dominated the domestic market, they were supreme globally. In 1960, the American car companies built 93 percent of the autos sold in the US and 48 percent of world sales. Today, Toyota has replaced Ford at number 2 and the Michigan auto industry (and related industries) are in crisis. I don’t think Mitt really “gets” what this is doing to the people of this state. I know he “talks” about it in his ads, but it’s not playing very well with people struggling to pay their bills from a guy who has loaned his campaign more money than they will have in their lifetime.
OK, sorry … didn’t mean to go on so long with this.
Michigan hearts Huckabee!!!
Rhbee,
I have always voted and have felt it was important for me to do so, but I do not like politics. Pardon the pun, but there is entirely too much politicking going on for my taste and as I said on my about page, both parties share in the blame for this. The reason my blog has turned into a Huckabee blog, at least for the duration of the campaign, is because I believe in the message he is trying to get across to the people of our country. In Mike Huckabee, I see a candidate who has the ability, if given the chance, to bring our country together and out of the political stalemate we have been in for years.
Kerry,
You have hit it right on the mark. Mitt Romney does not get at all the problems the normal people of Michigan or the rest of the country are facing. He is much more at home with the Fortune 500 types than he is with people like you and I.
So you don’t see any problem of divisiveness caused by his professed Christianity. How do you see him bringing us together when so many Americans have identified religion as the number one cause of so many of our and the world’s problems?
Rhbee,
No, I do not see a problem of divisiveness that is caused by his faith in Christ. If you will look at his record as Governor of Arkansas, you will find he worked across party lines to improve his state. Admitedly, this was to the chagrin of some of his fellow Republicans, when they found out he was more interested in improving his state and doing his job as Governor, instead of playing partisan politics. He has already proven how he can and will bring people together.
I don’t think Arkansas is a good comparison point for answering my question. I was asking about the definite aversion that the extreme right christian population of the country has aroused in the rest of the U.S. Why would a voter think Huckabee any different than Bush?
Rhbee,
You are making the mistake of comparing Mike Huckabee with President Bush and I do not believe that is a fair comparison. Make no mistake, Huckabee would be a different sort of President than George Bush. He has given no reason to make the people feel he would govern as President any different than he did as Governor of Arkansas.
Bush used the christian conservative position to become elected. Huckabee is using it too. They may be different as night and day but in this position in relationship to the rest of the U.S. population they are still going to be seen as the same, aren’t they. Why would those voters who have learned to mistrust this bias suddenly decide to trust it? And how can a conservative christian point of view which condemns the beliefs of others bring them together?
Rhbee,
Bush may have used the Christian conservative position to become elected, but Huckabee has given us no reason to believe he will be anything like Bush. I point you again, to Huckabee’s record as Governor of Arkansas. You may think it is not a good comparison point, but I believe it is. His record says he is able to govern and bring people together.
Okay, I grew up on a farm in Hampton,Arkansas so lets talk Arkansas, the land of ??? Apparently, after a tornado hit Texarcana, and lives were lost and property damaged and the services of electricity and water were disrupted, the then governor held up the signing of a bill that dealt with the insurance goverages because the acts of nature that did the damage were called “Acts of God”. The governor refused to sign the bill until the wording was changed to “Acts of Nature”. That took three weeks, but of course the resulting insurance claims because of the wording change are still in the courts. This behavior seems to be exactly like the behavior of GWB.
Meanwhile, to this observer, it also seems to be political behavior in the guise of appearing christian. Nevermind that it is also inconsistent to claim that “God” made the heavens and earth and then not let that same “God” take the responsibility when things go wrong.
Make that Arkadelphia not Texarcana. It would appear that this act of his won him the vote but did it pull the state together or simply unite the christians?
