The honest delegate count

For weeks now, we have all been hearing how John McCain has this amount or that amount of delegates. The talking pundits, combined with the McCain campaign, have done their best to convince us this race is all but done with, that we have no reason to continue to fight for Mike Huckabee. They would like to convince the voters of Texas, Ohio, Rhode Island, and Vermont that they have no reason to vote for Mike Huckabee, since there is no way possible he can secure the amount of delegates needed to win the nomination. While that may be true, he doesn’t actually have to secure the 1191 delegates. All he has to do is prevent John McCain from getting the magic number. Again, if you listen to the talking pundits, you will get several different numbers concerning the amount of delegates each candidate has.

In order to clear up this little bit of confusion, here are some actual numbers, broken down by candidate and by state. You can find the full chart here.

  • John McCain has 874 pledged delegates
  • John McCain has 33 unpledged delegates
  • Mike Huckabee has 210 pledged delegates
  • Mike Huckabee has 23 unpledged delegates
  • Mitt Romney has 124 pledged delegates
  • Mitt Romney has 57 unpledged delegates

The list goes on, but you get the picture. While the task at hand may seem daunting, it is not impossible for Huckabee to pull this off and take this race all the way to the convention.Even this morning, listening to NPR on the way to work, I heard a story that stated John McCain could possibly clinch the nomination by winning the primaries today. Since the term has been made so popular, let me say it. It is mathematically impossible for John McCain to clinch the nomination today. Even if he wins all four states, he will still come up short of the 1191 delegates.

So, my friends in Texas, Ohio, Rhode Island, and Vermont, there is a reason for you to vote for Mike Huckabee today. You can make a difference in this election and in the direction our country is headed. Vote early and vote for Mike Huckabee. Rest assured, it is not a wasted vote.
