November decisions
I suppose you could say the time of reckoning is at hand. The time of decision is certainly drawing closer and I need to decide how I will be voting in the Presidential election, come November.
When the Republican primary season was in full swing, I didn’t have this problem. I made my decision the minute I discovered and researched Mike Huckabee. Beyond any doubt, he was my candidate for President. Now that the field of candidates has been narrowed down to John McCain, Barack Obama, Bob Barr, and at least one more third party candidate, I have to decide who will get my vote. There are arguments for just about any position I could possibly take on this problem. Kevin Tracy has written a fine article that lists the pros and cons of the three candidates I have listed above. Kevin has been toying with the idea of supporting Barack Obama and while I understand why he is playing around with that idea, I can not support Obama. It simply isn’t an option for me.
When it comes to John McCain, I am not fond of him either. There is something about him that I inherently distrust. It may have something to do with his unfaithfulness to his first wife. In my opinion, if a man can not be trusted to be faithful to his wife in all circumstances, then how can he be trusted to lead the most powerful nation in the world? His actions while in the Senate have not warmed my heart to the man either. He has repeatedly shown himself to be unfriendly to Christians and conservatives and the causes we care about deeply. There are too many instances to list here, but suffice it to say, I am not convinced the man would be on our side in the fight for America.
There have been those who have pushed hard for Mike Huckabee to become McCain’s Vice-President. They see that as the only way a McCain ticket can be salvaged. While I do believe Huckabee would be a good man for the job, I have neve expected McCain to choose him. Not only that, but I am not sure it would be a good idea for Huckabee to even accept the job, simply because I believe it would be a losing ticket. Despite the polls showing McCain running in front of Obama, I see virtually no chance that McCain will win the November election. With the celebrity status of Barack Obama, with his being the first African American to get this close to the White House, with the strong unpopularity of the war in Iraq and his opposition of said war, I believe Obama will probably sweep the floor with McCain.
I realize some people believe that by not supporting John McCain as we supported Mike Huckabee (and as Huckabee requests us to do), we are actually throwing the election to Obama. I do not believe that for this reason. The minute the Republican party decided to nominate a candidate such as McCain, the election was already thrown to whomever the Democrats would choose to nominate. With that being said and with my total distrust of McCain, maybe it is time to turn to a third party candidate. If you would like to research Bob Barr, please visit his website and read where he stands on the issues we all care deeply about. Please make your decision, as I plan to do, by knowing your candidate, instead of just voting for whomever the two major parties decide to nominate. It’s your vote and your decision.
I am not so foolish to believe a third party candidate stands a chance to win in November. However, if there are enough voters who vote for Bob Barr or some other third party candidate, then maybe a message will get through to the Republicans and the so-called leaders of the conservative and Christian movements. They had their chance to nominate someone who could have beaten Obama, but instead, they chose to undermine the Huckabee campaign at every turn. They have made their bed and now they must lie in it.
That’s my take!

Larry,
You and I usually agree on things. This election is going to be hard for me to make a decision, too. After finding a candidate that scored 100% with me on at least 1 voter’s match quiz; it will be hard to ever settle for the “lesser of 2 evils” again. I have researched Barr and he lost any chance of winning my vote when he changed his views on DOMA. He has made it part of his platform to repeal it; which means homosexual marriages in MA or CA would have to be honored in states even if they have marriage amendments. No thank you! Although, he will probably win many Log Cabin Republicans’ votes.
Whether or not I vote for McCain, depends on who he chooses as his VP running mate. If he chooses Mike Huckabee, I will enthusiastically vote for him and try to persuade others to do the same. If he chooses another very consistent moral values VP; I’ll probably put up a yard sign and vote for him. If he chooses Romney or any other candidate with a liberal moral values record; only God knows what I’ll do. Because, I sure don’!
Thanks for the plug, Larry.
Granny T,
A Democratic Vice President once declared, “the vice presidency isn’t worth a pitcher of warm piss.” Although a little disturbing to think about, the man was right.
Mike Huckabee or any other man of good moral character would have absolutely ZERO influence over John McCain. It would be nothing more than a sad gimmick to get you to vote for him. Sad because it may actually work.
John McCain, a man who cheated on his wife, said abortion was necessary, supports amnesty for illegal aliens, opposes constitutional amendments for the defense of marriage and the right to life, supported the unconstitutional campaign finance reform law would be the President and the person who nominates judges.
Mike Huckabee or any VP would have absolutely no say in the matter.
Do you want someone with a history of caving in to Democrats to be the person nominating judges to the Supreme Court?
Granny T, I’m sure you’re smarter than that. Invest your vote in a 3rd party candidate.
