Newt Gingrich needs to stay out

Well, the title of this blog is “My Take” and this article is proof of that.

Reported here, Newt Gingrich is still testing the waters of the Presidential campaign and Dr. James Dobson may be supporting him. I sincerely hope that is not the case. Gingrich is a very smart and calculating man and is very savy, politically. He does stand for conservative values. He does not, however, stand for the same values as Mike Huckabee. In my opinion, he is not even close.

Now, all of these people have been saying we need to get behind someone who can be elected. Someone who can beat Hillary Clinton. I do not believe Newt Gingrich is that man. Consider this quote from the National Review.

The hard truth is that, in a general election, Gingrich would go toe to toe with Hillary Clinton — in unpopularity. In a Rasmussen poll this August, a majority had an unfavorable opinion of the leader of the Republican Revolution: Only 37 percent viewed Gingrich favorably, with 54 percent holding a negative view. Hillary was viewed unfavorably by 52 percent and favorably by 48 percent. With voters eager to “turn the page,” a contest between Newt and Hillary would be redolent of a bitter past. The Republican party owes Newt Gingrich a big debt. It will benefit should GOP politicians borrow some of the initiatives that result from his latest project. But not if he runs for president.

I have seen some comments that there may be a Gingrich/Huckabee ticket on the horizon. I really hope that is not the case. I am not supporting Mike Huckabee to be Vice-President. I want him to be President. Our country needs him to be President. So, Newt Gingrich, please consider our country and stay out of the 2008 Presidential campaign.

That’s my take!

Larry

Gingrich is vulnerable on the character issues we used to beat up Bill Clinton in 1992. He’s a serial adulterer. For that reason alone, he owes it to the GOP to stay out of the race.

As for unpopularity, the NR article you cite has it dead on. A Clinton vs. Gingrich race might come down to no one but the hard-left and hard-right voting. They might have to keep polls open late in Rhode Island and Alaska just so that SOMEONE votes …

    Wickle,

This is not a good thing at all for Mike Huckabee. My head spins at the thought of what might happen. Thanks for your comments.

As far as you adding me to your blogroll, that is fine. Can you post your blog address? I would like to read it.

You’re right, this is bad news for Mike. I was really hoping that one of the big names would have the guts to back Gov. Huckabee, since he is the real thing and the media-appointed front-runners are more into posturing. Sadly, courage is sorely lacking, I guess. It’s better to get behind a front-runner than to push a good candidate into the front.

… which is why we’ve ended up with mediocre Presidents for the last twenty years.

Gingrich should stay out (as much as I like him) because he would have absolutely NO chance of winning the election.

You’ll be happy to know that FoxNews has confirmed that Newt WILL NOT be seeking the Presidency.

    Thought you’d want to know.

Thanks, Jeremy. I appreciate you letting me know. That is one more obstacle out of the way.
