No, America has sacrificed to free other nations from dictators." This is not an either/or issue. America's great legacy is the sacrifice to free others; but in the eyes of world opinion that is history and the "what have you done for me lately" attitude is predominant. Unfair? Absolutely. But as we all know a lifetime of goodwill can be erased by a single act of stupidity. A long-time friend who in a drunken stupor says "man, your wife is a fat, ugly beast" is a friend no more....the history matters not-at-all if the transgression is sufficiently outrageous. That's where we are in much of the world's opinion and our transgression was, in fact, dictating to other nations. I do wish that Obama would spend more time emphasizing the positive, the history, but the mea culpa aspects of his message are also appropriate.
