Michelle Obama at the Democratic National Convention

August 26, 2008 by LD Jackson · 5 Comments

Last night, I was listening to Fresh Air on NPR and the guest was talking about the way Democrats are including more talk about religion and values in their convention than ever before. It’s clear they are pushing more and more to connect with people who vote for their values and while I don’t see them making many inroads in this election cycle, due to the abortion issue, they are making progress. They are taming down the abortion rhetoric in the party platform.  Part of this is due to the executive of the Democratic National Convention, Leah Daughtry. She is an ordained Pentecostal minister and she seems to be very comfortable in both positions, trying her best to make both of them meet in the middle. The New York Times has a very good article about her, if you want to learn more.

I have been watching a replay of Michelle Obama’s speech at the Democratic National Convention and I must admit, she is a very good speaker, at least as good as her husband. From learning what the Democrats have planned for the convention and from listening to her speech, it’s clear they are reaching out to different groups of voters, groups that they have not reached out to in the past. Make no mistake, I am not supporting Barack Obama and I believe I have made the reasons abundantly clear. However, if last night’s speech was any indication, John McCain and whomever he chooses as his running mate have very much of an uphill battle to defeat them in November.

Kevin Tracy has the video of the speech if you are interested in watching it.

That’s my take!

Michelle’s speech was lovely, but the baa-ing masses are too thick-headed to see that it is Obama kool-aid “see what a nice man I am” … “I won’t hurt you or your children” …. “trust me”.

Scary how the masses are marching to the chant of change and yet most of them can’t even articulate what Obama’s policy plans even are.

Pretty speech, and utterly terrifying when you look beneath the surface for its purpose.

I, too, heard bits and pieces of the speech, and was fairly impressed with her delivery; there wasn’t much content, though. As the camera panned the audience, it showed many teary eyes, and I wondered “why are they crying?” It later dawned on me the reason might be what Senator Obama brings to the table: higher taxes, giving our nation away, porous defense, etc..

On the other hand, the senator really looked inept as he pretended to be just one of the “common folk.” That image just doesn’t ring true, IMHO. Does plastic sound right? Anything to get a vote, no matter what. Pitiful!

    Kerry and Preacher,

Yes, it is scary when you start looking at the purpose of the speech and how people are flocking to Obama, without knowing what he really means when he says he wants change.

As for him trying to act like one of the common folk, he looks as bad as Mitt Romney trying to do the same thing.

    Larry,
You’re proving how shamefully bias you are.

Nobody looks as bad as Mitt Romney acting like one of the common folk.

The awkwardness of having that family there was offset by the youngest Obama daughter. She probably ruined whatever the DNC had planned, but it undoubtedly worked to their advantage a heck of a lot better than whatever they had planned.

(That’s meant to be taken as a joke. Thanks for the plug!)
