Michael Jackson’s death and afterwards

I promised myself I would not write anything concerning the death of Michael Jackson, but the ongoing circus surrounding his death bears mentioning. Without a doubt, Michael Jackson was one of the best known entertainers around the world. He was also one of the strangest and I do not have to go into any detail for you to know and understand what I am talking about. His antics over the years speak for themselves, in no uncertain terms.

michael_jackson_2The latest uproar is about where Jackson will be buried and if there will be a public memorial or viewing of the body. It was thought he would be laid to rest at his Neverland Ranch in California, but that idea seems to have been nixed, much to the chagrin of many of his fans. Many had converged around the ranch, hoping for a chance to attend a public viewing.

The Associated Press is reporting this morning that the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has been asked to help with the probe about the details of Jackson’s death. It amazes me that this can be carried this far. Two autopsies have already been performed and it is a well known fact that he was taking all sorts of medication, including pain and anti-depressant medication. With all due respect, he most likely brought this upon himself. I understand the family wanting to know what happened, but knowing isn’t going to bring the man back from the dead.

Since he died on June 25, every day seems to bring some new bit of news, either concerning his death or concerning his $500 million estate will be managed. The wrangling in the courts has already begun, with his mother, Katherine Jackson, who was named as the guardian of Jackson’s three children, being challenged by the attorney for the will’s executors, John Branca and John McClain. Paul Gordan Hoffman called Katherine Jackson’s move to gain limited control of her son’s estate “improper”.

It’s no wonder this is going on. No matter who gains final control of the estate and the children, there will be considerable wealth involved. No one involved is willing to give up that kind of money and power without a fight. I fully expect Michael Jackson to stay in the news long after he is buried and it may have nothing to do with his music. As much as I do not care for his style of music and dancing, he did have a lot of talent and that is what brought him fame and fortune. It would be a shame for him to be remembered more for what happened after his death than before.

Without a doubt, Michael Jackson one of the best performers and the most tragic and strange personas we are ever likely to see in our lives.

While I agree that ultimately Jackson made his own life decisions, I disagree that the probe into his death has gone too far.. This isn’t about what killed the King of Pop and the other sordid details of his life that has become the soap opera du jour of media and water coolers around the world. I think it’s more about who aided in his demise. It appears that, along with the garden variety pharmaceuticals, Jackson had in his possession Diprivan-a drug only used as a general anasthetic within controlled surgical and hospital-based environments. Somebody had to procure this for him, as you cannot get it through normal prescription processes. The physicians/health care professionals/hangers-on who participated in procurement of this drug (as well as possible knowing participation in scams like “doctor shopping) could and should very well be held criminally responsible.

Michael Jackson’s music never really appealed to me, either, but that doesn’t make any difference. He certainly had loads of talent and, tragically, loads of controversy, too. Larry, I agree with you about the circus atmosphere – it’s just been too much.

I feel for his family and know they are deeply hurt by this tragedy and all the media attention that has been showered on the situation. It’s a sad thing.
