Gay marriage now legal in Connecticut

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) – Gay marriage is legal in Connecticut now that a judge has cleared the way. New Haven Superior Court Judge Jonathan Silbert ruled at a brief hearing Wednesday morning that gay and lesbian couples now may pick up marriage license forms at town and city clerks’ offices statewide.
Many gay and lesbian couples are planning ceremonies Wednesday.
The judge ruling followed a historic decision by the Connecticut Supreme Court.
The high court ruled 4-3 on Oct. 10 that same-sex couples have the right to wed rather than accept a civil union law designed to give them the same rights as married couples.
Even though Proposition 8 passed in California, effectively banning gay marriage in California, we now have to contend with this on the east coast. I personally do not believe homosexuality is right, but these people are free to live their lives as they see fit and I have no problem with them having a civil union, but they are not content with that. They insist upon encroaching on marriage, with the help of judges who keep making laws from the bench, over the will of the people. Marriage is and should remain a sacred union between one man and one woman. Anything less is simply not a marriage.
That’s my take!

As an American, I believe in democracy and the supremacy of the people. In the U.S., laws are established by the people (through referendums) and through the people’s elected representatives in Congress and state legislatures.
As an American and a regular voter, the liberal activism of the Connecticut Supreme Court offends me. It is not the place of the judiciary to make laws, and it is certainly not the place of a judge to stick his or her finger in the proverbial winds of culture to decide cases.
If the people of any state choose, in a free and open election, to amend their state’s constitution to permit gay marriage, then the will of the people must be respected. When the people’s representatives in the legislature pass a law to allow civil unions or domestic partner benefits equivalent to those offered to married couples, that is the law of the land. The Court’s action is an affront to democracy and an unconstitutional usurping of the people’s sovereignty in this country.

You make a very good point, DC. The voters always defeat gay marriage at the polls, so the courts have to take up the slack and allow it over the will of the people.
