Fred Thompson attacks Huckabee

The purpose of my blog is not to bash other candidates, but rather to help get the truth out about Mike Huckabee and his campaign for President.  That being said, I have had about all I can stomach of Fred Thompson throwing out baseless attacks on Mike Huckabee without doing his research and knowing the full story.

What I am talking about is the accusation by Thompson on Fox News that Mike Huckabee used to be for the right of a state to make the decision about abortion.  We all know how Thompson stands on this, as he made it very clear on NBC’s Meet The Press.  Being as he has been called on the carpet for the statements he made about the Right to Life Amendment, he is trying to make it seem as if Mike Huckabee used to hold the same belief and has just recently changed his position.  That is not the case.  Below is a quote from an interview done in 1995.  Keep in mind, this is not the entire interview and when reading this quote by itself, it is easy to take out of context.

So, I’ve never felt that it was a legitimate manner in which to address this and, first of all, it should be left to the states, the 10th Amendment…

Fred Thompson would like you to believe Huckabee holds this position, which is his own.  However, what he doesn’t give you is the context in which this statement was made.  I want to include a statement made by jdbrown on the Huck Army Forums, in an article discussing this very issue.  I include it because jdbrown says it a lot better than I can.  He says:

Mike was talking about the Supreme Courts role in the matter of Roe v. Wade. He wasn’t talking about his overall preference. The Court only had two options, leave it to the states, which was the standard at the time, or find a constitutional reason to deny state jurisdiction (which is what they did).

The Thompson campaign has also attacked Huckabee for his position on illegal immigration, stating the same old song about his supporting tuition breaks for illegal immigrants.  For those of you who have been following the Huckabee campaign, you already know his actual position on this issue.  For those of you who are just now stumbling onto this, I refer you to the transcript of the Wolf Blitzer interview with Huckabee, earlier today.  If you will read towards the bottom of the transcript, you will find the real story of what was happening with this issue.

You can get more information about Mike Huckabee’s stance on the issues at the Huckabee website.  The Huckabee campaign manager, Chip Saltsman, has issued the following statement, regarding the attacks by the Thompson campaign:

“The desperate attacks on Governor Huckabee by Fred Thompson are evidence that Fred’s show is running out of material and he’s left to cranking out re-runs. Fred has been confused about being pro-life, but Governor Huckabee never has been. Governor Huckabee helped successfully lead the passage of human life amendment in his state and as governor signed numerous pro-life bills. Fred was taking money as a Washington lobbyist to be a mouthpiece for a pro-abortion group when Governor Huckabee was leading the March for Life. Governor Huckabee always has supported a Human Life Amendment, but also knows that the repeal of Roe v. Wade is better than the current laws.

“The Thompson campaign is also distorting Governor Huckabee’s views on illegal immigration by failing to recognize that sealing the border is his top priority. Regarding legislation to stop illegals from getting drivers’ licenses, Act 2210 of 2005 was signed into law by Governor Huckabee. The legislation made it illegal for a driver’s license to be issued to anyone who could not prove legal residency in Arkansas.

“It’s not surprising that Fred has hired an attack dog to churn out the very kind of ‘hit and run’ politics that Americans are sick of. Governor Huckabee is rising to Fred’s fall precisely because he is telling America what he would do to solve America’s problems while Fred is left to trying to resort to political dumpster diving.

It is sad that political candidates have stooped, most of the time, to attacking the other candidates, instead of relying on their own records.  It is good to have a candidate we can vote for, instead of having to vote against someone.

That’s my take!
